With Project Amazon beginning in three days, we asked audiologist Jason Baker how he was preparing and what he was looking forward to most. Here is what he had to say:
In less than a week, Dr. Burns and I will be on our way to Parintins, Brazil to begin Project Amazon 2016. At this point, it is actually starting to feel real. People keep asking me if I am prepared and ready to go. I keep answering with, “I have my VISA, I have my immunizations, I have my phone to take pictures, I have my journal to write about my experiences, and I have my otoscope.” My packing list is almost complete and the items are starting to create a nice pile on my kitchen countertop.
As I think about the adventure ahead, I’m first and foremost looking forward to meeting Dr. Edith Burns. I’m excited to spend the two-week trip working alongside and getting to know an Audiologist who has the same passions and interests as me. I am also looking forward to meeting everyone who will be guiding us and helping us throughout our journey.
I have never been to Brazil, let alone South America and I am excited to learn about the culture and history of Parintins and Brazil as a whole. I am also looking forward to learning about Audiology in Brazil and better understand audiological services outside of the U.S.
Ultimately, I am most looking forward to making a difference in the lives of the individuals and families we will be providing services to. I am hopeful that we can improve the quality of life and provide some ease of communication for the individuals we see.
Once again, I am so fortunate to have been selected for this once in a lifetime opportunity and I am proud to be representing students and audiology as a whole.
