Eight days to go until I fly out to South Africa to officially meet the rest of the team! I can not believe it is almost here! I have been praying for several years for the opportunity to take part in an Audiology mission trip. I feel so blessed to be given this opportunity to use my knowledge and skills to help others and be able to take part in this mission! Since I learned at AAA that I would be able to take part in this amazing trip I have been counting the days until July 29th, thinking it would take forever to get here and now it is right around the corner!
The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity for me trying to make sure I have everything I would need while in South Africa. Dr. Clark has been great to send us email updates to let us know what to expect and what to bring so I have been working on getting those items, some of which included: international health insurance, vaccinations, supply donations, appropriate clothes for the weather, etc. I must admit I procrastinated as long as possible on the vaccinations because I have been known to faint when getting shots, but I am happy to report I got all of the recommended ones and did not faint! In addition to getting prepared to leave I have been busy taking care of my current patients in my private practice. I am blessed to work with a very supportive business partner that is willing to keep our practice running while I am in Africa. I am so grateful that she is willing to help my patients while I am away!
My husband has also been helping prepare me for my trip in his own way…As an avid soccer fan he recorded and watched ALL of the World Cup games that were played in South Africa this year. Since I did not care to watch ALL of the soccer matches, he would call me to the television any time ESPN would do a special story about South Africa that he thought I would find interesting! I loved hearing more about the area and each glimpse I got only made me more and more excited about our journey ahead!
